Study of Psilocybin for Anorexia in Young Adults (SPANYA)

This study evaluates the effectiveness of psilocybin therapy for treating refractory Anorexia Nervosa in young adults. By combining psilocybin sessions with preparatory and integrative therapeutic support, the research aims to enhance cognitive flexibility to elicit long-term improvements in cognitive rigidity, eating, and exercise behaviors. Family members will receive psychoeducation during the therapeutic process, providing insight into the relationship between enhanced support dynamics influence long-term recovery outcomes.

The study involves psilocybin therapy administered in two in-person dosing sessions, interspersed with remote and in-person preparatory and integration sessions with trained mental health providers. Participants will undergo assessments of eating disorder symptoms before and after treatment. Family members will receive psychoeducation to support participants through the therapy process and beyond.

Starting late September of 2024, we will be recruiting individuals between 18-25 years old who currently meet DSM-5 criteria for Anorexia Nervosa. To participate, individuals must have tried at least one previous treatment, be able to commit to all study visits, and identify two family members for support.

Participants can earn up to $600 for participating, and family members can be compensated up to $100.
