UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Francisco has a comprehensive, experienced and interdisciplinary team who provides medical stabilization of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and related eating disorders.  This includes those with abnormal cardiovascular function and those who are severely underweight or with severe weight loss requiring nutritional restoration.

Our interdisciplinary team of experts in the treatment of young people with eating disorders includes a registered dietician, social worker, board-certified adolescent medicine specialists, a full-time psychologist, and nurse coordinator. We work closely with nursing staff, the consult-liaison psychiatry team, music, art and child life therapists in order to meet each individual’s needs while hospitalized. We also work closely with families in assisting them to develop tools to support their child during the hospital stay and in preparation for continued renourishment efforts at home. We view family members and loved ones as instrumental to the recovery process.

Once admitted, the eating disorders team provides:

  • Dietary assessment from a Registered Dietitian and an individualized meal plan to restore weight and physical health
  • Fully supervised meals
  • A range of psychosocial interventions to support families and individuals in coping with the hospital stay. These include a psychiatric assessment, family needs assessment, and one-on-one supportive therapies
  • Discharge planning with our interdisciplinary team to support continued progress at home.

Following medical stabilization, the patient's care may be continued with family-based outpatient treatment provided by te UCSF Eating Disorders PRogram, as well as medical and dietary follow-up care.
